Opening scene use many different methods to set the tone for the rest of the movie/show. One of the major methods is sound. The opening scene to 2001: A space odyssey it uses only sound. The director uses sounds that are science fiction related and space related. The music was also very eerie, and the screen was black. They tried to make you feel like you were in space for the opening scene which set the tone for the rest of the movie and had a very large impact. Another example of an impactful opening scene is the lion king. The Lion has an opening scene with a lot of colors. The scene starts of in Africa in the morning as the sun is rising, it shows all the animals running to a destination. There is a bunch of variety in colors and animals. The animals all gather around one place where a monkey raises the bay lion into the air and the animals get all excited and there is music playing. This will make someone who is watching the opening scene be interested because of all the intense colors and sights that will get them hooked. This shows the impact that opening scenes have on the movie.

In the article “First frames: In the digital realm” It states “While I find visual effects really fascinating because digital technology enables you to puff apart and put together a photographic image, now that video is being delivered interactively, it means a whole new range of hybrid media forms are really starting to emerge” Movies are pictures come to life. Directors understand the importance of opening scenes so they have to make it pop. Directors also use suspense to get the viewers attention which can be very impactful. For example in the film Scream It is very suspenseful from the beginning when the girl gets a call from a mystery man. He starts to threaten her. She starts becoming frantic and scared and the music gets very intense and then the scene cuts, leaving you wondering what was going to happen.

In the film Dazed and Confused the director tries to relate to high school kids by sowing high schoolers hanging out and smoking and having fun on the last day of school. They play music that appeals to high school back in the day. It gives the viewer a nostalgia effect if that’s what their high school experience was like then they are going to be intrigued to the rest of the film and for younger people it is a look into life before them. In the film Saturday night fever the color is bold the music is bold and the character is very bold and this is very intriguing to see watching an opening scene. Overall the opening scene is very important to the overall success of the rest of the film.
